Philosophy
Architectural practice is many faceted. In the case of Solstice Architecture, we focus on energy efficiency, green design, and service without a specific focus on a particular building type. We consider outreach and education essential to better inform the local community about green principles and the value of quality design regardless of budget. Through our planning and architecture, we intend to facilitate real, measurable change in central Indiana that results in a richer urban experience, improved health, and dramatically improved energy efficiency in our built environment.

In 2007, Solstice Architecture was created to directly explore the relationships between design, ecology and the community. Central to this effort is an appreciation for energy in its many forms, visible and invisible. As a small practice, we are flexible, assembling teams with unique skills to best serve a client's needs.

Background:
Solstice is led by Sam Miller. Sam has worked on over $1 billion in construction including the Terminal 1 Complex at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport from 1984-1986 and Circle Centre Mall in Indianapolis from 1989-1995, the two largest projects in his background.

He has always been fascinated by ecology and this interest guides his approach to design. He believes the reduction of our ecological footprint is directly tied to our built environment and innovative urban planning. As a species we have a moral obligation to make a difference.

One of his volunteer activities has been to lead an Indianapolis not-for-profit called Ecology House. EHI's goal is to educate people about how residential construction and lifestyle choices affect our health and the larger environment. Ecology House facilitates the creation of new and rehabilitated urban housing using green design principles. In addition, he also teaches a course called "Design, Ecology and Community" as adjunct faculty at Butler University in Indianapolis. Teaching facilitates his personal research and allows him to reach an audience of curious and motivated young people simultaneously.

Specialties: Green design and energy efficiency, historical restoration, repurposing existing buildings, project management, and master planning.
